A Day of Bliss At The Shangri-La Hotel's Chi Spa

Dubai is a city that is abundant in everything, from automobiles to food to fashion...you name it, we have it (well, almost everything). It's also a city that prides itself in the best hotels and relaxation spots.

I love spas more than chocolate (well, okay not really but I do love spas). It's one of those places I go to alone because I really don't want to make small talk while having a facial or a foot massage. I know several girls who take their gang along and create a fun girls day out. While that's great once in a while, I still prefer time by myself. After all, isn't spa time all about me-time?

I discovered a hidden gem at the Shangri-La Hotel, Dubai the other day. Chi, the spa is truly one of the best spas around Dubai. For this month, they have a selection of body massages and facials for both men and women. They've also introduced a new element on their listing- the Pumpkin Spice Body Peel and Wrap. Doesn't it sound perfect for this season and just about divine?

I opted for the Rebalancing Retreat; this menu item combines a brightening facial and a deep tissue back massage. The best part about my experience? This was the first time I signed up for a back massage.

My friends had been recommending back massages for months. I didn't give in at that time because I didn't have the time and I was a bit apprehensive of the whole experience. I heard how wonderful it feels and how the 'knots' would disappear making people feel much better but I ignored all that and went on with my life. I'm so glad I stumbled upon the Rebalancing Retreat.

The atmosphere at the spa is quite relaxing and you are shows to your locker, given the appropriate accessories to prepare for the facial and massage. I was promptly taken into my room and asked to fill in a quick skin and allergy assessment form. From there, my back massage was initiated. A concoction of warm lavender and germanium oil was applied along with Arnica cream that helps alleviate stressed muscles (and I know my entire body has those!). The 30mins of massage was incredible and no exaggeration here, I genuinely felt so much better. I wished I had a 60min massage instead! The therapist was great and applied pressure in the right areas. She also happened to pinpoint a problematic area and it was quite concerning for me to hear her identify the issue. Because, let's face it- for someone who isn't a medical practitioner, she sure got her facts right. I have a problematic right arm and shoulder. In the past, I've had x-rays done to hone in on the issue and remedy it. Medicines work, but only temporary. Nonetheless, the therapist advised me to take it easy.

While I was still basking in the happiness that the massage evoked, the therapist prepped my face for the facial. She cleansed my face with an Apricot Cream Cleanser followed by a Pumpkin Spice Peel exfoliator- which was quite incredible. I love cinnamon and the exfoliator pretty much reminded me of cinnamon infused tea. She followed this up with the Bulgarian Rose Otto face oil and post that, a hydrating mineral mask was applied.

I did fall alseep in the midst of this hour of relaxation but that just goes to show how calm every muscle in my body was. The facial concluded with a hydrating moisturizer. Right after, I visited the hot pools and it was peaceful sitting there, sipping on ginger tea. I don't know what brand of tea they use but ginger tea at spas are always delicious.

My time at Chi reminded me of how much I need to allocate me-time in my calendar as opposed to accelerating through each day. I loved the back massage and I'm definitely booking my slot in the next month and roping in my cousin and friend to tag along.

Chi at the Shangri-La Hotel is located on Sheikh Zayed Road.
