Nails of the Week: White

Tuesday, January 31, 2012

How cool does this white nail polish look on Luanne? You can either go glossy or matte (her's is glossy although the pics make it look matte).

Elie Saab: Haute Couture SS '12

Sunday, January 29, 2012

Anyone who knows me is well aware that Elie Saab is one of my favorite designers. I cannot stress enough that each of his designs are incredible and unique.

When his Spring/Summer '12 collection was recently showcased in Paris, I was stunned. I was still recovering from his last couture collection when he launched another set which is nothing short of a fairytale. The gowns are beyond beautiful, they are beyond anything I've envisioned an almost perfect gown/gowns to be.

Apart from using colors in his collection, he revamped the usual white wedding gown (which was his show stopper) and added a hint of baby pink. Here are my favorite gowns and dresses.

How gorgeous is the yellow gown on the left?
Leave it to Elie Saab to make peach on gowns and dresses look so beautiful
Never thought the color green would make a gown come alive. Just beautiful.

DC Comics Reveals New Logo

Monday, January 23, 2012

I'm a humongous comic book fan. Among others, I have two limited edition comic books featuring The Hulk and The Juggernaut (Marvel Comics by the way) which I will never part away from even if I were offered a gazabillion $$$. No, you cannot put a price tag on such. Unfortunately, in Dubai there's no store that's dedicated to stock the latest comic book releases, hot out of the oven. Pooh!

Now getting back to the topic at hand- after 7 years of the revamped logo in 2005 (the first was in 1940 or so), DC Comics have replaced their logo with the new  'peel out' logo aimed to reflect the dual identities that the superheroes possess. How awesome does it look now?

Namshi: Another Fashion Luxury Online Buying Site

Sunday, January 22, 2012

A few months after Sukar launched their fashion related online buying site in the region, we saw similar concepts emerge but Sukar has been able to hold ground so far with their regular marketing and PR campaigns.

Enter Namshi which will launch in Feb 2012 and offers the same services. They have brands such as Polo Ralph Lauren, Diesel, Geox, Havaianas and Puma to name a few.

The emergence of such sites poses the question- is eCommerce in the region growing and how are consumers approaching the online model of payment because I know 100s are not receptive to submitting their financial details online.

Launch: Bobbi Brown Middle East Website

Thursday, January 19, 2012

Bobbi Brown is one of my favorite cosmetics brand. And now, they have finally launched a Middle East version of the website! A warning though: not all products are listed on the website.

I first had a go at the brand while at Bloomingdale's Dubai Mall. My eyes were made up in my favorite smokey eyes by their Training and Special Events Manager, Eliano. It took him less than 5mins to create the look and I was flabbergasted- I always thought smokey eyes were a hassle but Eliano used only two products to create the look: the Gel Eyeliner (smudged to create the smokey look) and the Extreme Party Mascara.

On the site, you will find makeup tips, information on products and other details. They don't have the how-to videos which are available on the US and UK version but I'm thinking they will eventually build up the content of the website. Also, among other things the e-commerce element is missing; I would've loved to buy products straight off the site rather than go to the store but oh, well.

Angelina Jolie: The Golden Globes 2012 Makeup

Tuesday, January 17, 2012

Angelina Jolie @ The Golden Globes 2012

I love the Atelier Versace gown Angeline Jolie wore at the Golden Globes 2012. That gown was absolutely gorgeous but what made her entire look stunning washer accessories, hair and makeup. Something like old Hollywood glamor- red lips, played down smokey eyes and hair tied back in a chic bun.

I'm pretty sure a lot of beauty sites will come up with a How-to on this bun

The lipstick color matches the swish of red on her gown

Golden Globes 2012: The Fashion Parade

Monday, January 16, 2012

Let's get straight to the point. Apart from the awards, I look at what the actresses wore- this is the only time they get to glam up (premieres don't count) and for me, there were just 3 who stood out in terms of beautiful gowns that suited their complexion along with wonderful hair, makeup and accessories- Angelina Jolie, Emma Stone and Kate Beckinsale.

I'm no fashion expert but here are my favorite gowns and misses spotted at the Golden Globes 2012.

First up- my favorite actress, Angelina Jolie in Atelier Versace. This is such a beautiful gown and it's the first time I see a combination of red and nude done so well! Love Angie's hair, makeup, the clutch and shoes. She's kept jewelry to a minimal (earrings and a ring only) and that's an excellent choice- don't want to overpower the wonderful gown, now do we? The whole look is put together so well. If I were attending an awards ceremony, I'd definitely wear this.

Emma Stone in a gorgeous Lanvin gown- how beautiful is the color? Whilst I appreciate the shoulder detailing (think Elie Saab), I think the belt with the buckle is a bit off. Love how the gown falls; I wouldn't have selected a black clutch or black heels, though. I wish her makeup artist had done a bit more when it came to eye makeup and hair!

Kate Beckinsale in Roberto Cavalli. One word: gorgeous; the gown and Kate. The intricate detailing on the gown (which isn't clear in the images) is what makes it look so chic. I love the accessories and hair. Not a fan of the makeup- I think she looks too washed out- a lot of nude colors going on here (too much of anything isn't a good thing).

And here are the remaining gowns that caught my eye.

The feather sisters: Sofia Vergara in Vera Wang and Evan Rachel Wood in Gucci.

Elle Macpherson in Zac Posen. Very much a pretty fairy-tale type of gown

Charlize Theron in Christian Dior Couture. I think this gown with the mini train would've looked better if it didn't have that awkward slit. Something went awfully wrong with Charlize's hair- love the headband.

Here are the gowns that landed up on my dislike list:

Salma Hayek in Gucci- compared to the other gowns above, this is not nice at all.

Freida Pinto in Prada. What the heck, Freida? This gown does nothing for your body shape and really isn't Golden Globes material. The necklace almost disappears into her neck. Amazing color of the gown, though.

Reese Witherspoon in Zac Posen. No, no and no! No for the gown which is extremely simple, no for the hair (what the hell?!) and no for the accessories. If you're gown is this simple, at least accessorize your neck with a good looking necklace.

Michelle Williams in Jason Wu. No, again. Didn't velvet go out of fashion? And this really doesn't look like a big event red carpet gown. Looks kind of matronly to me.

Madonna in Reem Acra. As much as I love Reem Acra, I don't like this gown. Also, I don't think Madonna did any justice to this gown. First of all, wrong accessories. Secondly, what is it with a hand glove??? And third, I would've definitely styled the hair in another manner.

And the worst dressed award goes to...
